It seems that whenever Hollywood 'does' mental health, we always end up with these safe, highly romanticized portrayals! ' A Beautiful Mind' is another. It is an extension of the 'tragic but brave' stereotype, that tries to pigeon-hole our experience, as disabled people into a neat package where mental health can be consumed without rocking any boats.

Considering the lack of understanding of the social model of disability within 'survivor' culture, it is interesting that probably THE only blockbuster movie to date, that talks about disability as a power relationship is 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'starring Jack Nicholson.

Nice one Gabby. Be interested in hearing how the Safe Space project works out. Let me know if you need any artwork, cartoons or general disability equality training materials for the group. I'm sure other people would be pleased to assist as well. :-)
