About DAO
What is Disability Arts Online?
Edited by disabled artist Colin Hambrook, Disability Arts Online is a unique journal for discussion of arts and culture. DAO gives disabled and deaf artists, performers, film-makers, writers, and critics a place to talk about and share artistic practice.
DAO welcomes mid-career or emerging artists and companies who work under the umbrella of disability arts, to share artistic development; discuss issues; and get encouragement and knowledge about the value of disability / deaf arts and culture.
As a resource for continuing professional development DAO is a networking tool and a reference point in supporting disabled artists in developing their careers.
DAO offers an opportunity to share life stories and to make connection with a wider community of disabled people engaged in arts and culture. DAO currently has a dedicated audience of 6,000 plus visitors per month, who visit over 20,000 pages within the journal. Our comment forums are jam-packed with juicy dialogue with our writers.
Whether it be in-depth analysis or personal experience, DAO comments on how the arts reflect on disability - and vice-versa.
DAO offers a creative, thought-provoking journal for showcasing, reviewing and giving a voice to what is a unique and contemporary art form.
DAO blogs cover the working practices, aspirations and opinions of disabled writers and artists. Our blogs invite discussion and comment on professional artistic practice, as well as a range of arts and culture-related themes. They cover representation of our communities within the media and mainstream culture from our unique perspective.
DAO also performs a role as a tool for students, with many links to bodies within Higher and Further Education. On an informal basis, DAO frequently provides information and advice to students who are either on disability studies courses or researching disability arts.
DAO is always looking to welcome more bloggers, writers and reviewers within our ranks. If you would like to take up the opportunity to write for DAO, or to have your work showcased within the site, please contact editor Colin Hambrook via email: editor@disabilityartsonline.org.uk for guidelines.
